Being a professional creative (look Ma, I made it?) means that you spend a lot of time and mental/emotional energy making stuff, everyday. It’s exhausting, but very fulfilling, and I am grateful to be able to make this my work.
Over the past decade, being a professional creative has also evolved to include spending a lot of time on social media, to build community, to promote work, and to (hopefully) entice people into checking out what we make. I have met some of my favorite people through social media, including people I have gone on to work with. Again, grateful!
For a while now, though, social media has felt like a place where the negativity has overtaken the good. For people whose emotional and mental energy is a resource they use to make their work, this is counter productive at best – it is physically and psychically draining. It becomes not just a slog, but actively makes the job harder, and honestly, I feel like it is making me a worse person.
I don’t have the capacity to be on social media as my main means of connecting with folks anymore.
BUT, I don’t want to be cut off from all the amazing people I have met via Twitter and Instagram.
I am hoping that this space will become one where I can continue to connect with folks and nerd out about writing, sci fi, comics, and other cool shit!
What kind of stuff will I post? (free)
One of the things that I like about more blog/newsletter style sites is that you can really dig into things you are interested in! I have been wanting to do some medium-to-deep dives about stuff like:
writing comics (pitching, character development and detailed profiles for characters I’ve created, world building stuff, etc); general stuff but also about my own work.
writing in general (prose, screen writing, etc, look it’s not just my job it’s a Special Interest)
genre media (Tini Howard jokingly suggested that I do posts about the movies and shows that shaped my brain, and you know what, who wouldn’t want to do a medium dive about Cleopatra 2525 and Death Walks Tonight)
(limited) AMAs!
my cats (always, always cats)
Exclusive stuff to come (paid)
I hope to have enough stuff to justify a paid tier soon. I want to have at least a month’s worth in the can before I start that, but it’ll be like:
Prose WIP (why yes, I do be writin’ prose too) – I am trying to get back into the swing of non-comics stuff, and I figured it may be fun to share that with folks!
TQS content (Leah Williams, Tini Howard, and I have plans…stay tuned!)
That Xena podcast I am doing with my Mom (what if Xena was Puerto Rican?). I have about 9 unedited episodes already, and hope to record more soon! :3
There will be other stuff I’m sure, I’ll update when I figure it out!
CHECK OUT THIS STUFF
The rest of TQS: Leah Williams and Tini Howard both have Substacks!
Also, while I have your attentions, here’s some cool stuff that caught my eye this week!
THANKS SO MUCH
Thank you for deciding to come check out my Substack. I hope to be able to make it worth your time. <3
